Artistic

Romania can pride herself on a rich and charming architecture that features Byzantine, Romantic, Gothic, Baroque, Neoclassic, French Art -Nouveau influences, as well as elements from the Vienna and Budapest Secession. Most of those who commissioned these buildings studied in the West, where they were able to admire the residences and opulent lifestyle of noblemen, which determined them to resort to foreign architects. Thus, as early as the first half of the 19th century, Austrian architects Johann and Gustav Freywald, Josef Hartl, Julius Reinicke, Xavier Villacrosse, Johann Schlatter made themselves noticed. During the reign of Carol I, the Austrian, German and Russian architects were replaced by French or Swiss architects: Paul Gottereau, Louis Blanc, Albert Ballu, Cassien Bernard and many others. Subsequently, Romanian architects gained popularity in their turn. Among the most remarkable Romanian architects there can be mentioned: Nicolae Nenciulescu, Ion Mincu, Grigore Cerchez, Petre Antonescu, Paul Smărăndescu, Ion Berindey, and, later Duiliu Marcu, Toma Socolescu, Virginia Andreescu-Haret (the first woman architect in the world), George Matei Cantacuzino, Horia Creangă, Marcel Iancu and many others. Most often, the architects' work was complemented by that of the artists who painted the ceilings, the walls or created interior decorations. Some of these were: Arthur Verona, G. Demetrescu Mirea, Gheorghe Tăttărescu, Olga Greceanu, Cecilia Cuțescu, Gheorghe Petrașcu, Samuel Mutzner, Rodica Maniu etc., as well as contemporary artists: Corneliu Baba, Mircea Ciobanu etc. This section is dedicated to the residences that are quintessential of Romanian architectural styles and bear the signature of great architects and of artists who contributed to the aesthetics of these buildings and transformed them into fairytale houses. Artistic homes are ideal for those who love art, Neoclassic or Art-Nouveau architecture and who wish to carry forward the essence of these houses.
